The function of the Simple Present Tense :
1). To express habits, general truths, repeated actions or unchanging situations, emotions, and wishes.
• I smoke ( habits ).
• I live in French ( unchanging situations ).
• French is made city ( general truth ).
• I hope I can go to French ( wishes ).
2). To give instructions or directions.
• Go down this road, and then the first right. It’s on the right.
3). To express fixed arrangements, present or future :
• Your course finishes at 5.00 p.m.
The Formula of Simple Present Tense Without Verb :
(+) S + to be + obj. / comp
(-) S + to be + not + obj. / comp
(?) To be + S + obj. comp . + ?
Example : (+) I am beautiful.
(-) I am not beautiful.
(?) Am I beautiful.
The Formula with Verb :
(+) S + V1 + Obj. / comp
(-) S + do / Does + not + V1 + Obj. / comp
(?) Do / Does + S + V1 + Obj. / comp . + ?
• If the subject is third person singular ( he, she, it, John, Mary, the book, etc ).
The verb uses –s / -es form.
Example : (+) I play badminton = He plays badminton.
(-) I do not badminton = He does not play badminton.
(?) Do I play badminton = Does he play badminton.
Present Continuous Tense
The present continuous tense, made with a form of be and the –ing form of be and the –ing form of the main verb, indicates and action or event which is indicates and action or event which is actually in progress at this moment but much at any time.
The Formula Without Verb :
(+) S + to be + being + comp
(-) S = to be + not + being + comp
(?) To be + S + being + comp. + ?
Example : (+) He is being lazy.
(-) He is not being lazy.
(?) Is he being lazy.
The Formula with Verb :
(+) S + to be + V1 + ing + obj. / comp
(-) S + to be + not + V1 + ing + comp
(?) To be + S + V1 + ing + comp. + ?
Example : (+) We are going to the concert
(-) We are not going to the concert
(?) Are we going to the concert ?
Present Perfect Continuous Tense
Present perfect continuous tense is used to indicate an action was in progress in the past and continued to the present time.
The Formula of The Present Perfect Continuous Tense :
(+) S + have / has + been + V1 + ing + comp
(-) S + have / has + not + been + V1 + ing + comp + ?
(?) Have / has + S + been + V1 + ing + comp + ?
Example : (+) We have been waiting for you for two hours.
(-) We have not been waiting for you for two hours.
(?) Have we been waiting for you for two hours ?
